Benefit #6 - Reduce Early Spinal Degeneration

This is an extension regarding Benefit #5 on improving body balance.

When the body is balanced, the weight from one side of the body is equal to the other side.

However, when the atlas (C1) is out of position, this can lead to body imbalance.

Body imbalance can lead to a raised hip and short leg which can cause tight hamstrings, tight calf muscles, contracted spinal muscles, contracted shoulder muscles, and tight or stretched neck muscles. All of these issues may contribute to early spinal degeneration.

Your upper cervical doctor ensures your head is "on straight" by checking your nervous system to make sure it is functioning properly and to make sure your atlas is in the correct position.

Specific Upper Cervical Chiropractic Adjustment

Benefit #7 - Improved Body and Spinal Movement (especially when turning the head)

Did you know one of the first things people experience after being adjusted by an upper cervical chiropractor is an increased range of motion in the body and spine, especially when turning the head?

This is because the main responsibilities of the atlas (C1) and axis (C2) are to help facilitate the movement of the head and neck.

Atlas and Axis

FUN FACT: The atlas is a ring-like structure that rotates or pivots around the axis. The axis has a peg that fits into the atlas.

When the atlas goes out of position, one may experience a decreased movement when turning the head to one side compared to the other side.

Benefit #8 - Increased Adaptability

Adaptability is the key to life and our universe. If living things don't adapt to stressors, they eventually don't survive.

"While other professions are concerned with changing the environment to suit the weakened body, chiropractic is concerned with strengthening the body to suit the environment." - B.J. Palmer, DC (Developer of Chiropractic)

A lack of normal adaptation produces abnormal compensation.

An atlas misalignment can lead to an abnormal compensation within the structure of the spine,

This results in nerve tension and body imbalance in the upper cervical spine.

By adjusting an atlas misalignment, the body increases the adaptability due to an increase in functioning of the nervous system.

Benefit #9 - Decreased Stress and Fatigue

Stress is the #1 reason people get sick and develop into a health condition.

There are 3 major stressors that affect the functioning of our nervous system. They are:

  1. Emotional (Thoughts)

  2. Chemical (Toxins)

  3. Physical (Traumas)

An atlas misalignment happens when the brainstem can’t fully adapt to physical, chemical, or emotional stress that the body comes in contact with.

By taking pressure off the brainstem and restoring the nervous system back to proper functioning via an upper cervical chiropractic adjustment, the body moves from a state of DIS-EASE to EASE again; thus, decreasing stress and fatigue in the body. This then allows your body to perform at its best with a proper-functioning nervous system.

Benefit #10 - Improved Sleeping Patterns

The link between sleep and brainstem function is directly related to upper cervical area in the spine.

Brainstem and Upper Cervical Chiropractic

The bottom of the brainstem controls breathing in the body. It can play a vital role when it comes to sleep apnea.

If the brainstem and nervous system are compromised, it can lead to waking up repeatedly throughout the night or not getting enough restful sleep.

Sleep patterns and the process of sleep is controlled by the brainstem.

The C1 vertebra (atlas) surrounds and protects the brainstem. An atlas misalignment can affect brainstem function and thus lead to sleeping disorders.
